A SHORT TRIP TO OLD PILZEN IN BOHEMIA

Loafing around the old town of Pilzen – in the background huge new synagoge from late 19th century (the 3rd biggest in the world)

On our way from Berlin to Lower Bavaria we spent a night and day at old and lovely Pilzen in Bohemia. We already have seen a lot of Czech Republic since the early 1990s but Pilzen is really worth a visit also for a longer stay. Weather was quite cool yesterday  for the month of August (not more than 17° Celsius) but fortunately we faced only a little bit of rain during our short trip there.

Old and new on the central market place

After the Communist era a lot of buildings were in very bad shape. In the last 30 years a lot of efforts and projects made this old city very attractive again. You get a sense of old Bohemia but in combination  with modern concepts of city life – a good mixture.

Czech children adore this “Spejbl & Hurvinek”-sculpture, these figures are  an integral part of contemporary Czech culture

A green belt with flowers, bushes and trees surrounds the old city

Besides we also discovered a lost place (house ruin) and murals outside the old town in a normal and quiet licing area, a lot of motifs for a rather short visit.

This old venerable and interesting town in Bohemia is really worth a 2nd visit – then hopefully with much nicer weather.
